REFLECTION:
Luke’s account of the transfiguration event is the only one that includes the necessity of the passion on the journey to glory (“his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem”). Peter awakens from sleep to see Jesus’ glory and wants to stay there. “But he did not know what he was saying.” To share in the glory of Jesus we must walk the journey of Jesus: offer our very lives for the sake of others.
Connecting the Gospel
to the second reading: Paul assures us that we will be conformed to Jesus’ glory. This promise strengthens us to be subjected to Christ and “stand firm in” him.
to our experience: Early on – from the “terrible twos” – subjecting our will to another is challenging. As Christians, our whole lives are spent learning obedience to Christ (“listen to him”). This obedience is the dying to self that conforms us to Christ and grants us new life and glory.
