REFLECTION:
Why does Jesus begin with a wedding story? What, really, is the wedding? What, really, is the sign? This first manifestation of why Jesus came among us summarizes his whole saving mission. The marriage is between heaven and earth, divinity and humanity, God and us. The sign is how obedience leads to glory, dying to rising, believing to abundance.
- The many signs of God’s love for me are . . . . . . . . I respond by. . .
- “Do whatever he tells you” challenges me because . . .
- Jesus reveals his glory to me in . . . . . . . . by. . . . . . . through . . .
Connecting the Gospel
to the first reading: By using espousal imagery the first reading expresses God’s intense and intimate love for Israel. John places the first manifestation of Jesus in the context of a wedding celebration. God’s espousal love for all humanity is coming to fulfillment in Jesus.
to our experience: Few of us ever witness a dramatic sign like that reported in this gospel. Nevertheless, we are surrounded by many signs of God’s transforming love for us. We have only to see to believe.
