JANUARY 29, 2012 - FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

REFLECTION:
The people in the gospel twice responded to Jesus as one with authority: when he taught them and when he cast out the “unclean spirit.”  What was this authority?  Both in word and deed Jesus touched people in their need.  The people were “astonished” and “amazed!” because Jesus was saying and doing something new.  He was revealing God’s very presence and life – he is “the Holy One of God” among them.  And among us.

  • I am most astonished and amazed at Jesus’ teaching when . . .
  • That Jesus teaches with authority means to me . . . The difference his teaching makes in my life is . . .
  • I experience “the Holy One of God” within me when . . . among those with whom I live and work when . . .

Connecting the Gospel
to the first reading: Moses was a prophet who spoke God’s word with authority; now Jesus is the One God raises up to speak with authority – not just as a prophet, but as the Holy One of God.

to our experience: Thinking of evil in terms of demons and devils keeps it at arm’s length.  The evil in our world that we must confront and cast out is more personal and immediate: violence, poverty, discrimination, etc.

The Holy Spirit Parish

Holy Spirit Parish is a small Roman Catholic Parish in south-central Kentucky. We were founded in 1953 and our church was erected in 1968. We have 76 registered families, with a wide variety of ages and ethnic backgrounds. The majority of our parishioners are transplants from other areas, who have settled here for jobs, to be near family and/or friends or to retire near gorgeous Lake Cumberland. In the summer we welcome many visitors who come to Lake Cumberland. One of the gifts of our parish is our hospitality. We try to make everyone feel welcome and a part of our Eucharistic celebrations.
